100% UNKNOWN FIBRE ARTIST STATEMENT |
|
|
100% Unknown Fibre is an installation of 42 grey camp blankets of unknown fibre. They are each hand-stitched with an image or symbol of a pre-patriarchal God, such as God's Eye, Pregnant Mare, the Spiral, the Maze etc. All the blankets are menaced by detritus of our culture such as tin can lids, some cut &/or prettified. Some are further tormented with telephone wire, connecting to the air, going nowhere. Only stitches that assure front and back are the very same are used. This is not a two-faced installation. But it doesn't matter about that kind of sincerity, no one sees the whole picture, no on sees the face of God, we just get small bits. The installation was viewed by walking the square ramp 2 feet above the blankets in a darkened room. A motion sensor activated an audio component: a plea spoken in many languages by actor Anne Simmie.
