Red Thread, Read Through

Red Thread, Read Through began with the poetics of a curved line in mark making and turned to an expression of marriage, whether it is marriage with another or the one inside each of us, a tangle of masculine and feminine. Red vascular threads lace our bodies and oxygenate our cells as we move through existence to read our fate and write our destiny in our big and small worlds or galaxies. The works read the red thread of passion or fate, and parse lifelines.

“Matrimonial Bed” celebrates a union of two whether awake or asleep. Love, fate, and history bunch and tangle in a shaped tulle batting. Pearls, earth’s oldest gems, punctuate a butter-cloth and silk surface. The bed is entirely hand sewn, rests on a spidery red lace and the four corners of male and female ancestry.

“Galaxies,” wire spheres, represent worlds we inhabit as well as the ones we shape to support relationship. Balls of selvedge edge, unwritten potential, are caught in some. “Shared Red Thread Galaxy” is the world we create with our own fate and passion.

“Community of Marriage Boxes: Fourteen Pairs” is security from the institution of marital union as well as the balance of masculine and feminine in the psyche. Springs, a source-series of (wedding) rings, spiraling sexual experience on earth, rests in the bottom box while emblems of relational/spiritual air and fire hover in the box above.

“Read Through Writing on the Wall: Ten Relationships,” collages of screen-printed organza over sumi ink and wax crayon on vellum celebrate abstracted readings of relational existence.

Red Thread, Read Through references alchemy, which attempted to rescue the human soul and bring about salvation of the cosmos. Reading and writing are implicated.
